My Nickel’s Worth                     by Randy Ooney

Las Vegas

Every year in February, my former employer hosts a reunion for us retired Graybeards.  The banquet is held in the Orleans hotel, about two miles east of the Strip on Tropicana Blvd.  The Orleans is a friendly casino with 52 bowling lanes on the second floor.  I went up there to have a look and there was a tournament going on so I went back down to one of my other favorite pastimes, the Craps machine in the casino.

Of course visiting the bowling center reminds me that Las Vegas has been the bowling capital of the U.S. for many years.  I recall back in the mid 1980s when NABI was active in Minnesota, and every summer they would host the NABI Nationals at the Showboat.  The Showboat was an interesting place, with 70 lanes on the main floor.  However, if you took a walk around the corner, (Past the Ice Cream stand that sold chocolate Malts to die for) and there were another 36 lanes on that level.  NABI would have PBA pros there for a no tap doubles event with members.  Sadly, the Showboat is now history.

Several years ago, I ventured out I-15 to South Point.  It’s the newest Bowling Center and Casino near Las Vegas with 64 Lanes, back to back 32s.  I do not visit the USBC National tournaments any longer since my back won’t let me, but I realize many of my friends in Minneapolis have made the trip to South Point and take home some cash, if not from the lanes, then maybe from the casino.  Sorry but when I was there, I did not see a Craps machine.  It plays like regular casino rules, but most of them have $1.00 - $3.00 minimums and a seat at the table.  The craps tables in the casinos generally have higher minimum bets, and 12 or more players standing elbow to elbow around the oval tables.  It’s an easy game to play and the odds of winning a little are easy to figure and fun to play.

Good Luck if you are on the way.
