Women's State TourneyLed by four St. Paul Hall of Famers, two teams from the capitol city walked off with the top two spots in the USBC Women's State 58th annual tournament which concluded recently at bowling lanes in St. Cloud and Sartell. The Minnesota Mudhens #1, led by anchor Jeanne Morrow and Anchor Colleen Hartley rolled the top series of the tournament, a 776 on games of 208-289-279, to lead Mudhens #2 to a handicap score of 3,358 and second place. Karen Iago led off with 607 and was followed by Helen Nikiel 621, Mary Lou Vining-Berg 467 and Bev Anderson. Iago and Vining-Berg are the Hall of Fame members. In addition to winning the Division 1 team title, the Mudhens posted two all-time team records. Their 3,258 score bettered the old mark of 3,196 by Lind's On Track of Minneapolis in 1999. Their single game total of 1,141 topped the old record of 1,096 by Lind's/On Track Eden Prairie in 2004. Lind's Shoes of St. Paul also bettered the old mark with a game score of 1,103. The Seabright Electric of Spring Valley captured the Division 2 five-person team title by 10 pins over Westgate Bowl of Winona. Seabright had a handicap score of 2,957 to 2,947 for Westgate. (We're sorry that we don't have the names of the players on either team. (We weren't furnished them.) Teams from New Ulm and Eagle Bend claimed the top spots in Division 1 and 2 respectively, in the four player category Schells Splitters of New Ulm posted a handicap score of 2,816 for the Division Tit;e. Runner-up Tacoasis of Northfield had a 2,731 total. Mom & The Girls of Eagle Bend walked off with Division 2 honors with a handicap score of 2,441. Second place Judy's of St. Paul posted a 2,405 total. It was the first state championship for the teams from Spring Valley, New Ulm and Eagle Bend and the sixth State crown for a St. Paul team. Minneapolis teams have catured 16 state titles, followed by St. Paul with six and Red Wing, Duluth, Hibbing, Winona and Fairmont with two each. Prior to this year, teams from 33 other cities had won one state team title. Two pins separated the championship and runner-up in Division 1 doubles (average 301 and over). Jeni Burg and Ann Kurk of Caledonia won the title with a handicapped score of 1,393. Bonnie Lingbeck and Teri Johnson of Minneapolis finished runner-up at 1,391. Marcella Edelbrock and Carolyn Crawford Smith of St. Paul captured Division 2 doubles with a handicapped score of 1,277. Second place at 1,248 went to Jennifer Betker and Cindy Vannurden of Pierz. Jamie Anderson became the third St. Paul champion of the tournament when she eked out a ONE PIN victory over Angie Brabec of Maple Lake for the Division 1 singles crown. Anderson posted a handicap score of 764 to 763 for Brabec. Patricia Kullman of St. Paul finished third at 756. Audrey Colligan of Rochester won Division 3 singles with a score of 718. Anderson wound up as the only two-time champion of the tournament when she claimed the Division 1 all events with a handicapped score of 2,194. Kristi Amell of Detroit Lakes was runner-up at 2,160. Diane Meyer of St. Cloud claimed the scratch all events for the tournament with a 1,989. In addition to her prize money, she also earned a paid entry into the WIBC Quenns tourney.
